Making a difference one tiny trot at a time!
Just under twenty years ago we were asked to help and take on a little pony named Ruskin. He had been badly neglected and had zero trust in humans. It took a long, long time to even be able to catch him, he had been castrated incorrectly so needed another operation, his feet were overgrown and in awful shape, his teeth had never been checked and he had trouble chewing his food, he had a belly full of worms, the list goes on....
After years of bonding, building trust and taking it slowly with him he eventually came round and if you met him today you wouldn't believe its the same pony!
He is now so full of life and adores children, he even has a couple of his very own pony shares that come along each week to help care for him and take him riding.
He is the reason we started rescuing ponies, the satisfaction and joy you get from helping these little ponies makes every horrible wet rainy morning worth while.
After Ruskin we decided we would never turn away a pony in need, we have the space, the knowledge and the time to help more ponies like this... Why wouldn't we?!?
Over the years we have taken on numerous ponies and helped them along the way, most of them are still with us, others have found loving loan homes, which allows us to keep on rescuing more.
We have always been self funded and our Pony Parties business helps this hugely.Because of this we have managed to take on a couple each year, but we feel this isn't enough....We want to help more ponies.
Unfortunately with small pony breeds like shetlands there are thousands in the UK that need help.
Some of the reasons could be...
A lot of tiny ponies are bought for children and sadly outgrown very quickly then the owners aren't sure what to do with them next, years go by and the ponies become unhandled, which in turn usually ends up with them being neglected.
They are small and a lot easier to handle than bigger horses so end up with people that abuse this power.
There are huge amounts of small ponies dumped and abandoned, they interbreed and in turn produce more wild ponies, there are so many Mares out there that are covered again as soon as they've given birth that their condition just gets worse and worse until eventually they don't make it.
